Leather Care Glossary
Simple answers to common leather care questions
Leather care does not have to be complicated. This glossary explains the most common leather care terms, from leather conditioner and saddle soap to patina, waterproofing, beeswax, pine resin, and full-grain leather. Whether you are caring for boots, bags, saddles, gloves, jackets, furniture, or well-loved gear, these definitions will help you choose the right product and care for your leather with confidence.
Snowshoe Leather Care has been helping people protect and restore leather since 1927. Our products are made in small batches using a time-tested blend of hardworking ingredients including beeswax, pine resin, and other conditioners that help leather stay soft, supple, and protected.
A
Aniline Leather
What is aniline leather?
Aniline leather is leather dyed with transparent dyes that allow the natural grain, markings, and character of the hide to show through.
Because aniline leather is more absorbent and less protected than heavily finished leather, it can darken more noticeably when conditioned. Always test any leather conditioner in a hidden area first.
Best Snowshoe product fit: Leather Conditioner, applied very sparingly and tested first.
Application Cloth
What is the best cloth for applying leather conditioner?
A soft, clean, lint-free cloth is best for applying leather conditioner. Microfiber, cotton, or a clean shop cloth can all work well.
Use a small amount of conditioner and work it into the leather in thin, even layers. More product is not always better. A little goes a long way.
B
Bag Balm
What is bag balm for leather?
Bag balm is a leather care balm designed to condition, soften, and protect leather bags, purses, totes, and other everyday carry items.
Snowshoe Bag Balm is made for leather goods that get handled often and need protection from dryness, scuffs, and everyday wear.
Best used on: Leather bags, purses, totes, satchels, briefcases, and wallets.
Beeswax
Why is beeswax used in leather conditioner?
Beeswax helps condition and protect leather by creating a breathable barrier against moisture and everyday wear.
In leather care, beeswax is valued because it helps seal in moisture while adding water resistance and surface protection. It is one of the foundational ingredients in Snowshoe’s time-tested leather conditioner formula.
Belt Balm
What is belt balm?
Belt balm is a leather conditioning balm made for leather belts and straps that bend, flex, and experience frequent friction.
A good belt balm helps keep leather pliable so it does not dry out, crack, or become stiff over time.
Best used on: Belts, straps, suspenders, leather handles, and workwear leather.
Boot Balm
What is boot balm?
Boot balm is a leather care product made to condition, protect, and weatherproof leather boots.
Snowshoe Boot Balm helps restore dry leather, protect against wet conditions, and keep hardworking boots soft and flexible.
Best used on: Work boots, hiking boots, riding boots, cowboy boots, and everyday leather footwear.
Breathable Barrier
What is a breathable barrier in leather care?
A breathable barrier is a protective layer that helps repel moisture while still allowing leather to flex and age naturally.
Leather should not be sealed in a way that makes it feel plastic or suffocated. A good leather conditioner helps protect the leather while maintaining its natural character.
C
Carnauba Wax
What is carnauba wax used for in leather care?
Carnauba wax is a hard natural wax that helps add durability, structure, and surface protection to leather care products.
In leather conditioner, carnauba wax can help support a protective finish while allowing the leather to remain usable and flexible.
Conditioning Leather
What does conditioning leather mean?
Conditioning leather means replenishing oils, waxes, and moisture that help leather stay soft, flexible, and resistant to cracking.
Leather naturally dries out over time. Conditioning helps extend its life, improve feel, and restore some of the richness that can fade with use.
Best Snowshoe product fit: Leather Conditioner for broad use, Boot Balm for footwear, Saddle Salve for tack and equine leather, and Furniture Salve for leather furniture.
Cracking
Why does leather crack?
Leather cracks when it becomes too dry, stiff, or neglected. Once leather fibers lose flexibility, bending and pressure can cause visible cracks.
Conditioning can help prevent cracking, but it cannot fully reverse deep structural damage once cracks have formed.
The best way to prevent leather from cracking is to condition it regularly, keep it away from extreme heat, and avoid letting it dry out completely.
D
Darkening
Will leather conditioner darken leather?
Leather conditioner can temporarily darken leather because it restores moisture and oils to dry fibers.
In many cases, the leather lightens again after the conditioner absorbs and the surface dries. However, very light, unfinished, suede, nubuck, or highly absorbent leather may darken more permanently. Always test first.
Dry Leather
How do you know if leather is dry?
Dry leather often feels stiff, looks dull, shows light surface cracking, or absorbs conditioner quickly.
If your leather looks faded, feels rough, or no longer flexes easily, it may need conditioning.
F
Finished Leather
What is finished leather?
Finished leather has a protective coating or surface treatment that helps resist stains, moisture, and wear.
Many boots, bags, jackets, saddles, and furniture pieces are made with finished leather. Finished leather is often easier to condition than very delicate unfinished leather.
Full-Grain Leather
What is full-grain leather?
Full-grain leather is leather that includes the strongest outer layer of the hide and retains its natural grain.
It is prized for durability, character, and the way it develops patina over time. Full-grain leather often responds beautifully to regular conditioning.
Furniture Leather
What is the best way to condition leather furniture?
The best way to condition leather furniture is to clean the surface gently, test the conditioner in a hidden spot, then apply a thin, even layer with a soft cloth.
Leather couches, chairs, and ottomans often dry out from sunlight, indoor heat, body oils, and everyday use. Conditioning helps restore softness and reduce the appearance of dryness and light surface scratches.
Best Snowshoe product fit: Leather Conditioner.
G
Glove Love
What is Glove Love?
Glove Love is Snowshoe’s leather care balm for baseball gloves and other leather sporting goods.
It helps soften, condition, and protect leather gloves without overcomplicating the care routine.
Best used on: Baseball gloves, softball gloves, leather sport gear, and older gloves that need conditioning.
Grain
What does leather grain mean?
Leather grain refers to the natural surface texture and pattern of the hide.
The grain gives leather its character. Depending on the type of leather, the grain may be smooth, pebbled, corrected, embossed, or naturally marked.
H
Heritage Leather Care
What is heritage leather care?
Heritage leather care refers to traditional, time-tested methods and ingredients used to preserve leather for long-term use.
Snowshoe Leather Care fits this category because the brand has been around since 1927 and continues to focus on small-batch leather care made for boots, bags, saddles, gloves, furniture, and gear.
L
Leather Balm
What is leather balm?
Leather balm is a leather care product that conditions and protects leather, often with waxes and oils that help restore softness and add moisture resistance.
Balms are especially useful for leather that sees regular handling, bending, or outdoor use.
Best used on: Boots, bags, belts, gloves, tack, and gear.
Leather Cleaner
What is leather cleaner?
Leather cleaner is a product designed to remove dirt, grime, sweat, and surface buildup from leather before conditioning.
Cleaner and conditioner are not the same thing. Cleaner prepares the leather, while conditioner restores softness and protection.
Use leather cleaner first when leather is dirty, then use leather conditioner after the leather is clean and dry.
Leather Conditioner
What is leather conditioner?
Leather conditioner is a product that restores moisture, flexibility, and protection to leather.
A good leather conditioner helps prevent dryness, stiffness, and cracking while improving the look and feel of boots, bags, jackets, furniture, saddles, gloves, and other leather goods.
Snowshoe Leather Conditioner is made in small batches and has been trusted for nearly a century.
Leather Dressing
What is leather dressing?
Leather dressing is an older term for leather conditioner or leather protectant.
Many traditional leather care products were historically called dressings because they were used to treat, soften, and protect leather. Snowshoe’s older packaging used the term leather dressing, while the current product is called leather conditioner.
Leather Fibers
What are leather fibers?
Leather fibers are the natural protein structures inside leather that give it strength, flexibility, and durability.
When leather dries out, these fibers can become brittle. Conditioning helps keep them lubricated and flexible.
Leather Salve
What is leather salve?
Leather salve is a rich conditioning product used to soften, restore, and protect leather.
Salves are often thicker than sprays or light lotions, making them especially useful for hardworking leather such as boots, saddles, tack, furniture, and outdoor gear.
M
Mink Oil
What is mink oil used for in leather care?
Mink oil is traditionally used to soften and water-resistant leather, especially boots.
However, mink oil can darken some leather and may not be ideal for every item. Snowshoe’s approach relies on a traditional blend of waxes, oils, pine resin, and conditioners designed for long-term leather protection.
Moisture Resistance
What does moisture resistance mean for leather?
Moisture resistance means leather has some protection against water, dampness, and wet conditions.
It does not mean the leather is fully waterproof in every situation. Conditioning and waxing can improve moisture resistance, but leather should still be dried properly if it gets wet.
N
Nubuck
Can you use leather conditioner on nubuck?
Traditional leather conditioner is usually not recommended for nubuck because nubuck has a soft, brushed surface that can darken, flatten, or change texture.
Use products specifically made for nubuck or suede instead.
O
Oil-Tanned Leather
What is oil-tanned leather?
Oil-tanned leather is leather treated with oils during the tanning process to make it durable, flexible, and water resistant.
It is common in boots, workwear, outdoor gear, and rugged leather goods. Oil-tanned leather usually responds well to conditioning.
P
Patina
What is leather patina?
Patina is the natural character leather develops over time through use, sunlight, touch, conditioning, and age.
A good patina is one of the reasons people love leather. Conditioning does not erase patina. It helps preserve the leather so the story can continue.
Petroleum Oil
Why is petroleum oil used in some traditional leather conditioners?
Petroleum oil has long been used in leather care because it helps soften, lubricate, and protect leather fibers.
Snowshoe’s formula includes traditional ingredients chosen for performance, longevity, and the ability to keep leather pliable and protected.
PFAS-Free
What does PFAS-free mean in leather care?
PFAS-free means a product is made without per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often called “forever chemicals.”
Snowshoe products are positioned as PFAS-free while still offering real-world leather protection and water resistance.
Pine Resin
Why is pine resin used in leather conditioner?
Pine resin helps add tack, durability, and weather resistance to leather care products.
It is one of Snowshoe’s signature hardworking ingredients and supports the rugged, protective quality of the conditioner.
Pliability
What does pliability mean in leather?
Pliability means leather can bend, flex, and move without feeling stiff or brittle.
Conditioning helps maintain pliability, especially in leather boots, gloves, belts, saddles, and bags that are used regularly.
R
Restoring Leather
Can leather conditioner restore leather?
Leather conditioner can help restore softness, flexibility, richness, and surface appearance, especially on dry or neglected leather.
It cannot repair torn leather, rebuild missing grain, or fully reverse deep cracks. For severe damage, leather repair or dye may be needed.
S
Saddle Salve
What is saddle salve?
Saddle salve is a rich leather conditioner made for saddles, tack, bridles, reins, stirrup leathers, and other equine leather goods.
Snowshoe Saddle Salve is designed for leather that works hard, sees outdoor conditions, and needs dependable conditioning and protection.
Saddle Soap
What is saddle soap?
Saddle soap is a leather cleaning product used to remove dirt, sweat, grime, and buildup from saddles, tack, boots, and other leather goods.
Saddle soap is primarily a cleaner. After using saddle soap, leather often benefits from conditioning once it is clean and dry.
Saddle soap cleans leather. Leather conditioner restores softness and protection after cleaning.
Silicone
Why is silicone used in leather conditioner?
A small amount of silicone can help improve water resistance and protective performance in leather care products.
In Snowshoe’s orginal nearly 100 year old formula, a small amount of silicone is used for function. The goal is to help leather stand up to real-world use while staying soft and pliable.
Small-Batch Leather Care
What does small-batch leather care mean?
Small-batch leather care means products are made in smaller production runs rather than mass-produced at huge scale.
For Snowshoe, small-batch production supports quality control, consistency, and a more hands-on approach to leather care.
Suede
Can you use leather conditioner on suede?
Most traditional leather conditioners are not recommended for suede because they can darken the leather and change the nap.
Suede should be cared for with suede-specific brushes, sprays, and cleaners.
T
Tack
What is tack in leather care?
Tack refers to leather equipment used for horses, including saddles, bridles, reins, girths, breast collars, and stirrup leathers.
Tack needs regular cleaning and conditioning because it is exposed to sweat, dirt, movement, weather, and pressure.
Test Spot
Why should you test leather conditioner first?
You should test leather conditioner first because every leather type reacts differently.
Apply a small amount in a hidden area, let it absorb, and check for darkening, texture change, or finish change before treating the entire item.
U
Unfinished Leather
What is unfinished leather?
Unfinished leather has little to no protective coating, which makes it more absorbent and more likely to stain or darken.
Use caution when conditioning unfinished leather. Always test first.
W
Water Resistance
Does leather conditioner make leather water resistant?
Many leather conditioners improve water resistance by adding oils, waxes, or protective ingredients that help repel moisture.
Snowshoe Leather Conditioner conditions and waterproofs leather, making it especially useful for boots, saddles, gloves, bags, and outdoor gear.
Waterproofing Leather
Can leather be waterproofed?
Leather can be made more water resistant, but most leather should not be treated as completely waterproof.
Conditioners and wax-based products can help protect leather from wet conditions, but soaked leather should still be dried slowly at room temperature and conditioned afterward if needed.
Wax Bloom
What is wax bloom on leather?
Wax bloom is a light, cloudy, or whitish film that can appear when waxes rise to the surface of leather or leather care products.
It is usually harmless and can often be buffed away with a soft cloth.
