1. Rough Leather (Unfinished or Distressed)

Rough leather typically has a more porous, textured surface, often with little to no finish or coating applied. This type of leather can absorb conditioning oils more easily because the surface is less sealed.

• How it works: The conditioner penetrates deep into the fibers of the leather, rehydrating it and restoring its suppleness. Since the leather isn’t coated with a finish, the conditioner can really sink in and nourish the material from the inside out.
• Effect: After conditioning, rough leather becomes more pliable and resistant to cracking. However, it may also develop a slightly darker, richer patina over time, which is common with oils and conditioners in this type of leather. It may also feel more luxurious and smooth to the touch.

2. Refined Leather (Finished or Smooth)

Refined leather is often treated with a finish, dye, or protective coating, which gives it a smooth, shiny, or matte appearance. The finish on refined leather, whether it’s a glossy, matte, or textured surface, can start to wear down over time. Conditioning not only nourishes the leather but also helps keep the finish intact. It prevents it from cracking or peeling, maintaining that smooth, polished look that is characteristic of refined leather.
